Japan Day 3(Tuesday October 16th)

Hotel: Keio Plaza
Schools: Shoto Junior High\Higashiyama Elementary School

Events: Higashiyama 1-6th grade orchestra, Governor Bob Riley's Conference

Today has been very great. We visited two schools and the students were wonderful. Just like in America, you had some playing and others learning. Most were working hard. THe first school had 350 students and the second 920. THe average student to teacher ratio was 40 students per class!!! Don't we have it made! Their is no longer Saturday school but most student take extra classes to prepare to enter High school. We had lunch with students and they taught me some Japanese words. Lunch usually lasted 20 minutes and another 15minutes for student to run and walk throughout the school building. Most of the meals included soup, rice, milk and fruit. It has also been very good! Our day normally begins at 9:ooam and ends around 5:pm. ( This would be 7pm-3am USA time). I am really going to be confused when I return home.

At around 6:00pm, we attended Governor Riley's conference to honor the Japanese for their contributions to Alabama. We took pictures, talked with him and meet other State leaders. One gentlemen in particular is very special to THS. His name is Jim Brown and he is a former THS Graduate. He attended during 1953-1956. I also met the President of Montevallo (Mr. Philip Williams) and Birmingham City Councilor Steven Hoyt. We took many pictures and had a great evening.
Well it is time for me to leave. I will continue to update you on this exciting experience.
